HOUSE UPDATE
FALL 2017
With the Windy City’s harsh and snowy winter fast approaching, the brothers of Phi
Gamma Delta are taking full advantage of the time they have left this fall with the
house’s newly renovated outdoor patio. The terrace was completed this past summer
and is composed of high quality dark concrete with comfortable outdoor furniture,
as well as a new stainless-steel grill. The expansive and beautifully crafted outdoor
space, encompassing nearly 300 square feet, has become an integral part of fraternity
gatherings and has greatly increased the camaraderie
of social functions.
House Maintenance Manager Andrew Beytagh (2018)
has grown fond of the outdoor space and witnessed
firsthand the impact the patio has had on brothers’
quality of life firsthand, “whether it is grilling burgers
and dogs on a Saturday afternoon or bonding outside
on a late fall night, one thing is for certain: brothers love
spending time on the new patio. Although the winter is
almost here, we are all excited to enjoy the patio more
this spring. We are very grateful for all those who contributed to making the renovated
outdoor space a reality, and I am sure brothers will enjoy the patio for a long time.”
The new patio is not the only outdoor renovation recently completed. In October, the
house’s front and side walkways were gutted and paved with fresh concrete. The new
walkways have greatly enhanced the outdoor aesthetic of the house while providing
a welcoming environment to everyone who enters. Further, the grounds in the front
and backyards have been replaced with new high quality green grass. With all these
renovations, from the patio to the walkways to the grass, brothers can now thoroughly
enjoy the beauty and peace of the outdoors.

PLEDGE CLASS INTRODUCTION
The Chi Upsilon Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta is
proud to announce its fall 2017 pledge class, which
includes many shining stars and standout individuals,
who hope to one day make the Chapter and the
University of Chicago proud. Recently dubbed the
“Dynamic Dozen,” this group of 12 currently has
lived up to their name as they continue to get more
ingratiated with the mysteries of Phi Gamma Delta.
First in the class is Michael Beninati from Greenwich,
CT. He was a two-sport varsity athlete (baseball and
football) at his high school, he practices baking and
is interested in studying economics. According to
Michael, his passion for academic excellence, as well as
brotherhood, are two of the main factors that drove him
to pledge FIJI this fall.
Next is first-year baseball player Joseph Burns, a
native of Westchester County in New York. Joseph is
a chess enthusiast, who volunteers at local Chicago
schools on the weekends. He is interested in majoring
in economics and minoring in philosophy while
playing the outfield for the Maroons and participating
in several intramural sports.
Another standout is Tanner “Chad” Clark, who was
recruited to University of Chicago from California
for football. His interest in brotherhood, as well as his
passion for community service, were instrumental in
his choice to become a FIJI pledge.

passion for community service, were instrumental in
his choice to become a FIJI pledge.
Turner Corbett, who joins us as a post-graduate
recruit from Andover Academy, is the next feature of
the “Dynamic Dozen.” Turner will run track for the
Maroons and shows promise in his track and field
events. When asked what made him want to join Phi
Gamma Delta, he said, “as stated in the Purple Pilgrim,
FIJI’s goal is to build courageous leaders. As such, I
feel that the best place for me to become the man that I
wish to become is FIJI.”
First-year Chicago-native Theodore “Teddy”
Donnelley, a two-sport varsity athlete (hockey
and cross country), comes to us from Deerfield
Academy. He has spent a great deal of time working
on various projects shown on his website (www.
teddydonnelleymaker.com) and has said that FIJI’s
rigorous approach to academic excellence was among
the many encouraging factors that influenced his
decision to pledge.
Second-year pledge Justin Drago, from Peoria, AZ, is
a member of the football team and another one of the
promising economics students in this class. He hopes to
uphold the values of FIJI and bring honor to the Fraternity.
Davis Kim joins us from Chappaqua, NY. Although
he does not play any varsity sport here, he is a tennis
champion back home and will look to join the club
team here. His search for a brotherhood led him to
FIJI, and his relationship with the current brothers, as
well as his pledge brothers, is already a testament to his
character and ability to fit in with the Chapter.
Chibuike Nwachukwu, who comes to us from Chicago,
IL, is another one of our three second-year pledges. He
plays soccer competitively for our club team. FIJI has begun
to instill in him the values of persistence, integrity and
maturity. In fact, he has said, “without FIJI, I wouldn’t be the
man I am today. I am so grateful for everything the brothers
have done to make this experience possible.”
Next up is Yahya Salib, from Greensboro, NC, who
plans to major in economics and hopes to one day
PHILANTHROPY UPDATES
FIJI always tries to keep the community in mind. At the end
of October, some
FIJI brothers
volunteered
behind the scenes
in the Chicago
Innovation
Awards, an
event hoping to
recognize the most
innovative Chicago
Brothers volunteer at Ronald McDonald House
businesses, nonprofits and government organizations.
In other news, we have continued to work with the Ronald
McDonald House Charities. Our activities have included
regular volunteering and donations to the organization. As for
other volunteer efforts, FIJI brothers have again volunteered in
the operation of the Chicago Marathon.
As we dive deeper into the school year, FIJI brothers will be
looking to organize and participate in additional volunteering
opportunities, ranging from ones in Chicago, schoolsponsored events or possibly even FIJI-sponsored events.
\r\nLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Brothers,
It is a very exciting time to be a part of the Chi Upsilon Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta. Over the summer, the
Chapter as a whole, as well as individual members, were able to accomplish a great deal. The house is finally
finished, and the 24 brothers that live in it, along with the remaining 75+, are very grateful and proud to have the
most beautiful establishment in Hyde Park. We also just recruited a pledge class of 12 that will help us continue
to be the top fraternity in terms of size, scholarship, athletics and philanthropy. Also, we have already logged over
100 collective hours of community service as a chapter, despite the short amount of time that has passed in the
year so far.
It is a great honor to be serving as your president next year, after Clyde puts an exclamation point on what has
already been a stellar presidency. He has been phenomenal throughout this transition period and has helped me
understand a great deal. My incoming cabinet and I feel extremely confident that we will be able to continue the
tradition of excellence set by previous cabinets into the future.
Despite our term having yet to begin, our cabinet has already been working on a variety of tasks that I hope will
make all of us proud, including a meal plan for the brothers in the house, hosting sexual assault awareness seminars,
continuing to increase our philanthropy through charitable giving and completing community service projects.
Thank you all for your continued support of the Chi Upsilon Chapter. I am look forward to serving you all
starting in 2018.
Fraternally,
Stash Robert Rowley (2019)

PERSISTENCE
Persistence holds a special meaning to the brothers
of Phi Gamma Delta, many of whom are student
athletes or participate in a number of extracurricular
activities. Without this crucial quality, many of the
incredible talents of brothers, whether academic,
athletic or otherwise, would not be fully realized.
Every day, brothers call upon their deepest reserves of
persistence, managing some of the most demanding
and time-consuming schedules at the University
of Chicago. This impressive quality of our chapter
manifests itself in those grueling days when practice
is before class, followed by a full course load, RSOs
and fraternal participation. Brothers are only able to
balance all of these demanding commitments with
persistence, a quality that holds special meaning to
brother Patrick Rogers (2020).
“Persistence means that the things you want in life
are within your grasp if you’re willing to do what it
takes to take them. We are talented young men, gifted
with great genius, and in the process of achieving an
education at one of the world’s greatest universities.
But it doesn’t mean anything without the persistence
and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve
your dreams. Fijis are some of the most persistent
people I’ve ever met. Whether putting in the extra
hour to finish and understand the problem set, or
grinding and networking to get a job, the brothers are
a constant reminder of the power of persistence. All
brothers of the Chi Upsilon Chapter of Phi Gamma
Delta are incredible testaments to how much the
fraternity cherishes, necessitates, and implements
persistence day in and day out.” Finally, the wise
words of Winston Churchill could not encapsulate the
culture of Phi Gamma Delta any better:
“Continuous effort— not strength or intelligence — is
the key to unlocking our potential.”
\r\nGRADUATE UPDATE
David L. Rosenberg (1951) was the oldest
brother to attend Pig Dinner last spring, and
he gave $5,000 to the Chapter last year. Thank
you Brother Rosenberg for your continued
support of the Chi Upsilon Chapter!
DONATIONS REQUESTED
We’ve almost met our fundraising goal, and the support
we have received for the house renovation has been
amazing; we are immensely grateful. We request your
continued support for continued payment of the
renovations, finishing touches and other incidentals.
If you’d like to donate, you can send a check made out
to Chi Upsilon Alumni Assn. in the included envelope.
Thank you and Perge!
BROTHER SPOTLIGHT
Owen Moore (2018)
Dominex Kovac (2018)
I have learned what it means to be
a part of the amazing brotherhood
we have at the Chi Upsilon Chapter.
As an undergraduate, being able to
surround myself with hardworking,
intelligent and all around good people
has been so rewarding. I have learned
so much from being around these
men since I have been here. Through
my great experience with the brothers
that I consider my mentors, I have
been able to use their examples to
pay it forward and be that mentor for
younger brothers as well. I want to
take the lessons that I have learned
through school and through FIJI and
apply them to a career and a life where
I can feel like I am working to my full
potential and feel the fulfillment that
accompanies good work.
After graduation,
I would like
to work on an
equity research
team covering
the automobile
industry or
emerging market
research. FIJI is a
huge part of who I
am and who I have
become.
FIJI has taught me how
to act in social settings
and build meaningful
relationships. What
I take away the most
from the Chapter
has to be the close
relationships I’ve made
these past four years,
especially with those
that I was fortunate
enough to pledge with.
My goals are to have
a successful career
while still maintaining
friendships with all of
my brothers for years
to come. FIJI helped
me obtain these goals by giving
me confidence and improving
social skills in order to build the
relationships. After I graduate, I
will be working in San Francisco as
a software developer for Amazon.
FIJI has taught me so much that has
helped me obtain my goals.

BROTHER STUDYING ABROAD
G’day mate!
opportunities that Chicago does not offer.
My name is Robby Fuentes and I am a
fourth year member of the Chi Upsilon
Chapter from Long Island, NY. In
addition to being a brother, I am also
a pitcher on the baseball team and a
member of The Blue Chips investment
club. This quarter, I took advantage of
the University’s world class study abroad
program to spend the fall in Gold Coast,
Australia at Bond University.
In my Australian history course, we
have covered a variety of topics, and
have focused on the political, economic
and social formation of Australia. We
began with the establishment of colonial
Australia and the formation of white
settlement. The arrival of non-Europeans
to Australia is looked at as the leading
development for Australian nationalism
and the formation of current political
parties. We are currently discussing
Australia’s involvement with World Wars I
and II and how the country changed postwar. The course concludes with Australia’s
economic and cultural influences on Asia,
world terrorism and the strong alliance
they have with the United States.
So far, the experience has been
stunning. I am fulfilling the civilizations
requirements for University of
Chicago’s core curriculum by taking the
Origination of Australian Culture, along
with a class at their business school to
fulfill an elective credit for economics.
The educational experience has been
phenomenal, getting to learn about a
new culture that has been so incredibly
successful from the influence of western
civilization. I have been fortunate to
have the opportunity to spend a ton of
time outdoors. Bond University is less
than two miles from the beach, which
has allowed me to pick up on surfing
When studying abroad in a gorgeous
country like Australia, with some of the
most beautiful women in the world,
many skills I need come from outside
the classroom. The ability to meet
new people, try new things and, most
importantly, manage my time to make
the most of my few months here. These
are all life skills that I have learned in Phi
Gamma Delta and that have had a direct
positive influence on my experiences
here. At the
University, Phi
Gam has been the
single largest factor
in my development,
and I will be forever
grateful for that.
Gold Coast has
been fantastic, and
I have enjoyed
every minute I have
been here. But, I
am excited to get
back to Chicago
and spend my final stretch of college with
my brothers and getting to know the next
wave of Phi Gamma Delta brothers. I
am extremely excited for the upcoming
spring and can’t wait to see what’s in store
for this chapter.
Hooroo!
