Philanthropy:
• $34,000 raised for Miracle to conclude our efforts in February and over $90,000 raised to different organizations
• Already raised over $15,000 for Miracle this Fall – setting up for a record breaking total for February 2018
• No Man Left Behind Scholarship: our most recent initiated pledge class founded this need-based scholarship to help
pay dues of a brother every semester
House Renovations:
• Mr. Hardell and the House Corp continue to generously give their time to improve the house, spearheading the latest
project of an expanded porch over the pit this summer
Lastly, our brotherhood continues with unparalleled strength and success. All of these accomplishments would not have been
possible without the continued selfless and diligent service from both our undergraduates and our graduates to our chapter. It has
been an honor to serve as the chapter president in 2017, and I am very proud of all the hard work all the brothers of Kappa Deuteron put forth this, and every, year. I am confident this chapter is heading in the right direction, and will continue to build upon
this year’s achievements. Thank you for your continued support of this chapter. I look forward to celebrating Kappa Deuteron’s
50 years in the pursuit of excellence at the 50 Pig Dinner in March of 2018.

Eta pempton - PC 2017
Parker Allen 2021
The fall of 2017 saw the addition of the Eta Pempton pledge class to the Kappa Deuteron chapter at
UGA. The thirty-seven man pledge class contained twelve Phi Gam legacies, with nine of those twelve having fathers, brothers, or uncles from UGA. After a mercifully short six-week pledgeship, the newly initiated
probates found welcomed and settled in to their new homes on Cloverhurst Court and College Avenue. Academically, the men managed to earn a solid 3.53 pledge class GPA, keeping the strong tradition of academic success at Kappa Deuteron alive. Outside of the classroom saw a full social calendar. Tailgates improved
throughout the year just as the Dawgs ascended to the top of national rankings, and many made away game
trips across the Southeastern Conference, culminating in an incredible SEC Championship in Atlanta. Addi-
tionally, the men enjoyed a range of socials with a variety of sororities, even the joint social with Sig Ep.
However, between school and social life, everyone still found time to indulge personal interests. Brother
Carter Martin '21 of Madison, GA sharpened his carpentry skills following an incident with a table, and
Brother Sam Solomon '21 of Newport Beach, CA perfected his videography and singing skills over the first
few months of the year, albeit to little success. Overall, it was a phenomenal first semester, and the men
look forward to continuing their time as Phi Gams at the University of Georgia.

Todd Phinney Upsilon Deuteron “The Face Men” 1988
So what is this COMBAT FIJI thing that I hear about around Pig Dinner??? Great question! In the Spring of
2012, I returned briefly to The Classic City from my overseas military assignment in Germany to enjoy Pig Dinner.
Coincidentally, my son, Trevor, and nephew, Duff, were freshmen brothers and I was mighty proud to celebrate with
them as brothers! About a dozen of us from the late 1980s year groups joined for Friday night dinner and fun, breakfast
at the hallowed Mayflower, and enjoyed Saturday together before Pig Dinner. When we decided to do it the next year,
we had to have a name for this thing and decided on Mid to Late 80s FIJI COMeBAck Tour (COMBAT FIJI). Since
2012, we have continued the tradition every year with 2016 being our 5 th COMBAT FIJI. Our numbers have steadily
increased, last year we had a record 40 brothers in attendance. Our goals are simple: 1. Bring brothers back together
and rekindle our fraternal love. 2. Have time to do this before Pig Dinner so we can spend time with the Undergraduate Brothers on Saturday afternoon and night. 3. Live by example and show that our dear fraternity “is not for college
days alone.” 4. To have a really, really great time with each other. This year for Pig Dinner 50, our COMBAT FIJI goal
is 50+ brothers and I know we’ll make it! A special thanks to brothers Mike Kitchens and Scott Nichols for helping
host this incredible event each year!
A Fiji Island to Remember
John Douglas Epsilon Pempton 2019
Kappa Deuteron’s 2017 Spring Fiji Island party on March 18 was, in the words of President DJT, “a yuge
success.’ Band chairs Joseph Stark and John Douglas roped in a set list consisting of the historic reunion concert of
Doobie and the Goats, Athens’ own Orange Constant, and headlining with the ever so jammy Perpetual Groove.
Everybody in attendance knew that it was going to be a very special day in Athens once the word had spread that the
stars had aligned and Hell had frozen over and that every single member of Doobie and the Goats agreed to play in
one last farewell show to cap off an incredible collegiate career for the fraternity band. Their set was highlighted
with haunting covers of “Mahgeeta” and other “strictly mid-2000’s MMJ hits” (at Brother Brett Grayson’s request)
led by the amazingly talented vocals of Brother Dubois. Legend has it that even lead guitarist Charlie Burress got
lucky that night for the first time without having to play the entire solo to Freebird.Orange Constant, who is always
a crowd pleaser, kicked off the evening activities with a lively sunset show right as the sorority girls and Brother
McKenzie began to wreak havoc on the Chick-fil-a food truck. Shocking their listeners with a historic encore cover
of “Dayman”, things really began to turn up as the crowds filled in and the sun began to fully set.
Perpetual Groove finally took the stage around 9:00 when they kicked off their set with a hypnotizing
“TSM2”, followed by their trademark cover to Talking Heads’ “Naïve Melody”. Cloverhurst has never looked better
with the two houses covered expertly with bamboo and strung up with Christmas lights thanks to the Zeta Pempton
pledge class, and it looked even better with the light production coming from P Groove’s stage. Perpetual Groove
finished off their set with what was probably a 45 minute jam of “Three Weeks” as the party finally came to a close at
11 o’clock. All in all, another great Fiji Island at 3 Cloverhurst Court and special thanks to all of the brothers who
helped make it happen.

Chapter Event with Extra Special People
Jacob Fucetola Delta Pemptom 2018
On October 12th, Kappa Deuteron hosted for the second straight year an event for the Extra Special People of Athens between the houses at 3 and 6 Cloverhurst Court. ESP is an organization devoted to enhancing the lives of children with disabilities in the Athens-Clarke County Community. Over the years, this has been one of the many organizations on campus and in the community that brothers have given their time and involvement to. This year, we partnered with Kappa Delta to host this event, where over fifty members and numerous volunteers came and enjoyed
fellowship, music provided by Brothers Charlie Haas, Charlie Burruss, and Logan Harr (featuring multiple stellar
appearances from ESP members), and lots of Zaxby’s.
Brother Sam Jarrard, a senior, has been the service chair for the fraternity for the past two years and has been in
charge of planning this event. Regardless of whether or not he hadulterior motives for choosing Kappa Delta as the
sorority we partnered with for this event (his past would suggest so), he has done an outstanding job at representing
the fraternity and helping this become one of the most anticipated events of the fall. Events like these show how the
brothers of Kappa Deuteron work not for themselves, but for others, and are truly a “Cut Above”.

The Dawgs Travel– Making it to Every Away Game
Jacob fucetola Delta Pempton2018
The members of the Delta Pempton pledge class (forever known as the DP’s) decided their freshman year that
come senior year, they’d make it to every Georgia football game that season. The home games are a given for all the
guys in the fraternity (unless your name is Charlie Adams), but going to all the away games is no easy task. Not only
does it get expensive, but close to every other week it requires you to give up both Friday and Sunday to travel. Unless
your name is Charlie Adams, Sundays are generally spent doing a majority of your studying for the week and catching
up on school work after a long weekend. The seniors decided, nonetheless, it was their duty that lied nearest, and
committed to every away game.
This season started with a trip up north to Chicago and South Bend to watch the Dawgs take on Notre Dame.
Highlights of this weekend included the Cubs game and Wrigleyville on Friday, where Neil Bitting unapologetically
opted for Option C and used an empty cup sitting on a table in front of a family to puke (foregoing to employ what is
assumed to be Option A, the restroom, and Option B, the nearby trashcan). Brothers David Diaz and Greg Sullivan,
the up-and-coming real estate moguls of Atlanta, were seen outside Trump Tower marveling at their hero’s building.
Brother Michael Fahsel’s incessant imitation of Lou Holtz and “Tushdown Jeshsush!” resulted in some angry Irish fans,
but everyone made it alive to the game on Saturday. The game itself wasn’t pretty, but the Lorenzo Carter-Davin Bellamy defensive stand late in the fourth quarter sealed the deal for a Dawgs victory. This weekend was one to remember.
The next away game was against the Volunteers in Knoxville. At the time, no one realized what a complete
joke Tennessee Football was this year (sorry Kramer), and everyone had the fresh memory of the Dawgs performance
there in 2015. Keeping with tradition, the Delta Pempton pledge class, in an attempt to save money, packed a concerning (and probably illegal) number of people in a single Econolodge room. The Dawgs took away one of the more
memorable wins of the season, getting sweet revenge on
Volunteers.

Just a week later, everyone was travelling back to Tennessee to take on the Commodores. Behind South
Bend, Nashville was the most highly attended weekend by brothers of all ages. The city, home of the 12 dollar Bud
Light, created unique challenges for each and every person. Brother Charlie Burruss got a little too generous with
his spending the first night and had to resort to the generosity of his twin brother Tommy for the rest of the weekend. Brother John Boynton, chapter President this past year, appeared to be celebrating retirement a little too early,
and failed to make it to the early 11 AM kickoff, or even the entire first quarter. Thanks to Ben Cleveland chopping
his feet, the Dawgs easily carried a win against the commodores.
Next game the highly anticipated Georgia-Florida weekend. Frat beach was as lively as ever, but the game is
what will be remembered years from now. Brother Michael Shutley can be seen below taking a little snooze from
cheering too hard, with Trey Thorne ecstatically looking after him. The Dawgs went up 21 early and our defense
completely shut down the shark humpers, ending in a total blowout of the Florida Gators.
The weekend of 11/11 was completely voided by the SEC championship and will not be mentioned.
Georgia vs Georgia Tech, the final regular season game for the Dawgs, was played at Bobby-Dodd in Atlanta. In celebration of the Run for the Kids the day before, the seniors celebrated with a night at the “Haasapulco”,
home of Brothers Jordan and Charlie Haas. The noon kickoff gave the Dawgs yet another reason to hate the yellow
jackets for being that bad, but RoQuan Smith and the defense weren’t caught looking ahead. The Dawgs easily carried 38-7.

The next weekend required yet another trip to Atlanta for the SEC championship. Brothers Michael and Todd Shutley hosted the senior crew for the biggest game of the season, being as hospitable as ever. Brother Huling experienced
“Martha” for the first time, the buckhead bars sucked as always, but the tailgate put together by Garett Mackenzie and
Joe Start, partnering with SAE, Sigma Chi, KA, and Chi Phi, helped calm the nerves of all the brothers in anticipation. The 4 PM kickoff finally came, and in a performance for the ages, the Dawgs beat Auburn and became SEC
champions for the first time since 2005.
The Dawgs, for the first time ever, were invited to play in the College Football Playoff against the Oklahoma Sooners
in the Rose Bowl. Naturally, this game had great attendance by the undergrads and graduates alike. In what should go
down in an all-time top 2 college football games, the Dawgs beat the Sooners in double overtime.
Unfortunately, the Dawgs fell to the Tide in a heartbreaking loss. Nonetheless, the Delta Pempton pledge
class ended their four year career better than any pledge class of Kappa Deuteron has in quite a while, and feel confident this will be the first of many opportunities for the Dawgs to win a national championship in the coming years.

Mountain Weekend
Tommy Burruss Delta Pempton 2018
For the second year in a row, the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta have travelled up to Camp Wayfarer outside of Asheville, North Carolina, on the Dawgs’ bye week. Marked by extremely cold weather, the wilderness,
meals and cabins modeled after those from POW camps from WWII, and absolutely no showering/privacy, this is
one of the most memorable experiences of the year. Everyone arrives separately Friday afternoon with a lot of
sleeping bags and liquor, hoping to grab a mattress that looks a little better than the others. The cabins consist of
cinder-block structures with screen doors and windows (lacking screens), and wooden bunk beds with bare mattresses on them. On Friday there is a bonfire with smores, with Brother Patrick Risse commencing the weekend
activities by seeing how many marshmallows he can fit in his mouth. On the basketball court, Brothers Wade Cox
and Nolan Sullivan battle back and forth to see who is more “the man” in front of their dates, and the sophomores
hang out in their own weird circle, refusing to socialize with the rest of the fraternity. The freshman struggle with
their first weekend on their own and with a date. Some, such as Freshman Sam Solomon, got so nervous that they
figured it was better to sleep outside in a bush than to sleep next to his date. Being older and wiser, sophomore
Jonathan Sweat decided to go solo and not worry about a date. We are fairly certain Solomon will be following in
his footsteps next year.
Saturday, all the brothers grabbed their flannels and headed off to Asheville for a day in the mountain town
to check out the breweries, restaurants, televisions, central heat and AC, wifi, and most importantly, the bathrooms with toilet paper and a door that shuts. Brother John Douglas declared “I have found my home”, and opted
not to return to the mainstream town of Athens, Georgia. Brothers Garett Mckenzie and Cole Lackey, having withdrawals from not spending any money the night before, redeemed themselves with the acquisition of collector
grade hand-blown glass vases which they now use to store their change. The next day, everyone (except John
Douglas) travelled back to God’s country, asking themselves why they ever thought mountain weekend was a good
idea.

Beau Lamb Creek
Jacob Fucetola Delta Pempton 2018
Behind the houses of 3 and 6 Cloverhurst Court lies a creek well known to the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta.
From a pledges first encounter with it walking through the pledge path, to a graduate brother driving up behind Cloverhurst passing over it on the way back to a game day, it has been there since the beginning and will remain until the
end, just like Brother Bill Bracewell. Every few decades though, an undergraduate brother without fail gives this
creek a new namesake. This year, junior Beau Lamb was on his way back to his apartment from the house with a big
plate of food. The fraternity, attempting to make their cholesterol and blood pressure levels a cut above normal, was
in the “Weaver D’s” period of catered food (post Mayflower). Beau couldn’t have been more excited about his big
plate of fried chicken. As he drove down the hill, his plate started to slide off his seat and naturally, he reached over
to save it. An instant later he realized what he had done and slammed on his brakes. Unfortunately, this was too late.
He felt the front of his truck teeter over the edge, and completely flip over. Two tow trucks and the worst phone call
of young Beau’s life later, his truck was pulled out of the creek. I remember seeing Beau and asking if he was okay and
the only thing he said was “I didn’t even get to eat my dinner”.
From now until the next brother of Phi Gamma Delta’s mistake, the creek will be called Beau Lamb Creek.
