INITIATION
basketball season was a
definite success as our team compiled a
perfect 11-0 record. There were eight reg
ular season victories and the three playoff
victories over LCA, SAE, and the NIX that
gave us the League Championship.
Led by
"Coach of the Year" Tom Dutkiewicz, and our
starters Tom Burns, Bill Delphos, Dick Fillippetti, Mike Irwin, and Mike Merkle, the
team proved to be too much for its competi
tors. Dick Fillippetti made first team AllStars and Mike Irwin the second
team
All-
Stars as a result of their fine showing
this season. Ace sub A1 Vogt led the bench
support, followed by Jeff Coderre, Glen
Fraser, and Dick Perreault. Other players
who periodically lent their support were
Bob Wood, Rick Turner, and Paul Wheeler.
We look forward to an equally fine season
next year as this year's subs hope to fill
the gap left by departing seniors Dick
Fillippetti, Mick Merkle, Rick Turner, and
On April 14, 1973, 10 pledges were initiated by the Pi Iota Chapter of Phi Gam
ma Delta. This Initiation climaxed a "week"
of life, help, and learning at the house
from which everyone benefited. After the
initiation ceremonies, a dinner was held at
JT's Steak House in Worcester Center.
Pre
sent at this dinner were the newly initia
ted neophytes, the present brothers, and a
few alumni. Sitting at the head table were
Doc Atwood, Doc Johnson, former president
Bruce Szypot, and the cabinet.
Prior to this "help" week and initia
tion, the pledge class participated in va
rious activities for the house, the most
important being the class project.
This
year the pledges constructed and stained a
wooden cabinet to house and protect our
newly-bought color television, and for the
party room built a few more tables of simi
lar t3/pe as those used presently.
The pledges also put on their annual

party during the second
The annual Brother-Pledge basketball
game was played on March 21st with a fine
turnout by everyone concerned. The brothers
had no problem with disposing of the pledge
class as we used the skills of our Champ
ionship basketball team and W.P.I. Varsity
players Jim Aceto and Bill Rutter, as well
as many other brothers in the house. It was
a good time for all and was highlighted by
The theme of "Cowboys and Indians" was gi
ven help with the decorations including
scenes of both cowboy and Indian life, com
plete with a slatted sidewalk and swinging
saloon doors.
It seems that the pledges
were sorely outclassed in skit competition
with the brothers, but all agree that the
lack of acting talent did not foreshadow
shortcomings in the party, which was en
joyed thoroughly by brothers, pledges, and
unorthodox scenes such as
15-man teams and
Jon Wyman atop Greg Stamper as center.
During the basketball season another
sport was in progress, lesser known, but
still important. FIJI Bowling moved along
in its less spectacular way and achieved a
28-20 record, good enough for 5th place in
the League.
Consistent starters were Tom
Bums, Joel Angelico, Rick Turner and Glen
Fraser. Various alternates played very im
portant roles during the season and in
cluded Terry Lee, Rick Aseltine, Jim Aceto,
Dave Salomaki, and Bob Wood.
The most recent sporting event was the
I.F.C. Swim Meet. Organized by our varsity
swimmers Rick Aseltine and Dave Salomaki,
the house team put up a very valiant effort
in copping fifth place in the meet. Parti
cipating in the meet were Dave Salomaki
(second and fifth places), Dave Eves (fifth
place), Steve Cummings (second place), Tom
Burns (third place)
and the
fourth place
relay team Jim Aceto, A1 Vogt, Dave Eves,
and Dave Salomaki.
Most important of all
was our placing ahead of KAP, a prominent
rival.

dates.
Thus the pledges have become neophytes
and the sought goal of Brotherhood will be
reached at Pig Dinner on May 6.
And then,
with all being brothers, a concentrated ef
fort will be put into Fiji Island, being
the last big event of the year. Surely all
brothers remember the events of their first
year in Phi Gamma Delta, and we all join in
wishing the neophytes good luck and in say
ing we are proud to have you here.
FIJI SPORTS -
continued from Column 1
As a result of our fine showing in
these sports as well as our third place
finish in Volleyball last fall, it seems
that we are in good shape to take the Sport
Cup for the second season in a row.
Only
table-tennis, softball, and track remain to
be completed and we should place well in
each. Here's hoping that we are able to
continue our domination of I.F.C. Sports
for the second consecutive year.
