1980 November Newsletter Pi Iota (Worcester Polytechnic Institute)
GRADS COME HOiME!
FIJI ROCK CON'T
At first the 1980-81 season
seemed like i t would "be a dry one
for the new Pi Ides editor.
The
response from his first publication
was discouraging as well as leaving
him with little to report in his
next graduate section. A special
Homecoming flyer was mailed out to
generate some psych and hopefully
to get alot of grads to come home
to Pi Iota.
Much to the delight
of the undergraduate chapter, the
response was widespread as a large
turnout ventured back to
"Old 99"-
The grads were greeted warmly at
the house and brought down to the
homecoming football game.
A
canopy was set up at one end of
the field from which hot dogs
and beer were served.
This along
with the fine weather helped lift
the social spirits which renewed
many a friendship.
The football
team's sound victory by two Fijis
made the afternoon a complete su
ccess.
The evening also proved
enjoyable as many grads stayed the
night to enjoy the sounds of the
band. Homecoming 1980 proved
successful and we hope this success
continues on to Pig Dinner '81.
As the editor,
I
ask you
In the winter of'77-'78 the
rock was stolen (supposedly by a
brother of Theta Chi)
recovered.
Thanks
and never
to the resourcefulness
of Brother Bob Guigi '79 a replace
ment of much larger mass and volume
was obtained to maintain the trad
ition.
In fact the rock was so
heavy that Old '99 shook when the
stone was dropped from the truckbed.
Our worries were over.
Never again
would Pi Iota go rockless.
In the
ensuing years the rock ' would be
painted, torched, hit by cars and
even bombed but
the monolith was
there forever: or was it?
In the fall of 1980, the brothers
returned to WPI only to find the
pedestal that once held their rock
empty.
This time the party respon
sible was the City of Worcester
which removed
ers that

the
other bould

as well.
Heartbroken and plagued by a
flood of inquries about the rock
and its well being, the brothers
of Fiji set out to find another
replacement for the rock.
This time,
before it was replaced, its absence
would be noted by Deans and Prof-
graduates to write in any alumni
news you care to share with your
fessors of WPI and members of local
churches to name a few.

the rock.
The new Rock (even more massive
than its predecessors) now sits
comfortably in the same old spot

accepting new coats of paint every
other night.
This is one-tradition
that is not going to die easily.
