Spring 2014
A NOTE FROM THE NEW PURPLE LEGIONNAIRE
By: Ryan Shoup (2011) - Purple Legionnaire
Another year has passed, and
2013 has been a successful
year for Xi Deuteron. One of
the chapter goals over the
past year was to involve more
graduates in the chapter –
since the chapter wants to be
a living example of
‘not for college days alone’ –
and the chapter is well on its
way.
One way to achieve this goal
was to resuscitate the Board
of Chapter Advisors. Ideally, the
group should be used as a
sounding board for the chapter
officers to obtain feed- back on
current chapter operations and
can also be an extension of the
Purple Legionnaire to help
move the chapter closer to its
goals. With the assistance of
Ken Kovach (1967), the Chair
of the Board, and a host of
recent CWRU graduates looking
to stay involved, the Board
meets monthly and continues to
refine its mission and goals in
conjunction with the chapter.
The chapter is also seeing an
active Housing Corporation. We
consider the Xi Deuteron house
to be the best on campus and it
makes me happy to report this
group meets each semester to
review pressing house needs
and plans for future capital ex-
penditures to keep the house
ahead of the rest.
As the chapter looks to maximize its vast graduate base,
please do not hesitate to get
involved in any capacity
possible. For example, the
chapter is looking for individual class representatives to
filter information about
graduate events from the
chapter to graduate base.
And, don’t forget to RSVP for
Pig Dinner - April 12!
The chapter will welcome you
in any role, whether on a
formal board, a mentor to a
specific event or chapter
office, or an attendee to the
graduate events, and your
involvement will continue to
ensure Phi Gamma Delta truly
is not for college days alone.

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: KEVIN CARNEY (2009)
Xi Deuteron founding father
and spring 2009 graduate
brother, Kevin Carney, is now
a CPA certified accountant at
Cohen and Company. Kevin
has served in many capacities
in his time as an undergraduate, most notably as Xi Deuteron’s first president since
coming back onto CWRU
campus. Recently, graduate
brother Chairut Vareechon
(2010) caught up with Kevin to
talk with him about his current
endeavors.
How long has it been since
you were initiated as a
brother of Xi Deuteron?
I was initiated in spring 2006.
Then it was fall 2007- that was
the first year in the house.
Whoa, it has been a while,
man. Six years? Rather, it has
been seven years.
How does that make you
feel?
Old. I feel like it was just yesterday that we were all hanging out- either hanging out in
the living room or upstairs on
the second floor. Time just
passes quickly.
Any fond memories of the
house you would like to
share?
I’m trying to think what my
favorite moment would have
been. I enjoyed going back
after a late evening, finding

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT continued...

brothers who were still awake and joking
around with them. I really can’t think of
a specific. You know what? I would say
the last two weeks of my senior year
where we were basically done with academic responsibilities. Just the whole
entire senior year second semester, I feel
living in the house was awesome. Between our formal, which was great, to all
the excitement of Greek Week, and the
number of brothers we had. The entire
second semester in the house was really
gratifying. We had accomplished a lot;
we had established FIJI back on campus.
When did you started working at
the firm Cohen and Company?
I started at Cohen in October 2009.
How did you end up at Cohen and
Company?
I liked the feel of the company and it felt
accessible. I had done an internship at a
larger firm and I didn’t quite really enjoy
it as much. I like more of the family feel
of Cohen, how it’s a midsize firm, and
working with my peers. Also, the clientsthe clients of Cohen and Company- is
what really made my decision.
What inspired you to be an
accountant?
(Laughter) It was suggested. It was suggested as a major I should go into during
school. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the classes
and a lot of the professors I had. And
then right now, I’m doing all tax work
and we are working with privately held
companies and entrepreneurs. Being on
the tax side, you get to see them benefit
from my hard work by saving them
money, and all that plays into their business and back to their families.
I hear passing the Certified Public
Accountant (CPA) exam is a difficult and lengthy process. Any
advice to future FIJI accountants?
Yes, study your butt off. It’s a time commitment.
How long did it take you to pass the
CPA certification?
Too long (laughter). It was hell of a
weight gone when I passed.
What challenges has the job
presented you?
Challenges, huh? Time and people management. But time management is something I got used to at Case due to being
involved with FIJI and taking classes. I’m
constantly dealing with deadlines and
managing work flows in and out…it is always a challenge. Making sure you are
delivering a good product but also the peer
and client interaction. Everyone is a little
bit different. Different people require different approaches. It is a constant challenge but it is fun at the same time. I think
FIJI and Case helped out with all of it.
Do you agree with the following
accountant perceptions or stereotypes?
Somewhat less extroverted
It depends.
Somewhat less agreeable
No, I don’t agree with that.
Slightly more emotionally stable
Yes.
Somewhat less open to experiences
I guess in general it is applicable but I
don’t think that applies to me though.
Why did you decide to stay in NE
Ohio?
I stuck around mainly in large part because of my family. They played a big role.
Being one of six kids, I wanted to stay involved with my older and younger siblings.
How are you dealing with the
brutal NE Ohio winter this year?
Ha! Surviving. I would say that I’m living
in better conditions than the FIJI house.
I’ve spent some significantly cold nights
in the BGB (laughter). I spend so much
time indoors for work and that is how
I’m surviving. Taking advantage of the
free heating in my office.
Any flat tires from the Cleveland
potholes this winter?
Flat tires? No, but I’ve lost a couple of
hubcaps. (laughter) My car is beat up
right now. These potholes are so bad.
Aside from notorious weather,
Cleveland is also known for the
Browns. How do you think they
will do this year?
Super Bowl champs.
Oh yeah?
Yeah. I’ll bet brother Matt Patton’s
(2009) first born on that.
Lastly, what has been the one thing
you have missed the most of Xi
Deuteron?
One thing I miss about Xi Deuteron, you
know what, it’s just really being in the
house and spending time with the guys.
