T
he Vance Hall Gala Reopening was held at the Phi Gam house on September 24-25,
1999. The weekend was a huge success with over 550 brothers, graduates,
friends and families attending. The graduate response was overwhelming from all ages
and all locations. Graduates from as far back as the 1940s to the present returned, and some
graduates came from as far away as California, Michigan, New York and Florida.
On Friday night, we had a catered reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres by Catering Works
under a tent in the Phi Gam back yard. Dress was coat and tie and music was by the Risse
band. On Saturday, a pig pickin’ barbecue lunch catered by the Barbecue Lodge was held in
the back yard. We were entertained by a local bluegrass band. Two big-screen televisions were
brought in so we could watch the Florida State vs. UNC football game, but strangely enough,
after the first quarter ended with UNC losing 28-0, the channels changed to the Ryder Cup
Golf Tournament. After the game, a disc jockey entertained in the front yard and a late-night
band and disc jockey were in the backyard for the undergraduates. Hotel rooms were reserves
with shuttle buses
going back and
forth.
It was a
memorable
weekend to catch
up with old friends
and retell old
stories about all
the good times that
we have all had at
Vance Hall. It was
also a special time
for the brotherhood to come
together and
actually see the Phi
Gam house come
back to life after three long years, countless hours of work and numerous contributions. It was
truly a time that made you proud to be a Phi Gam. The feedback has been overwhelmingly
positive.
However, there remains work to be done. A number of graduates have not yet contributed
and many others have not been contacted. Over $1 million has been raised, but a mortgage is
still held on the house. With over 50 undergraduate brothers and 15 new pledges, the undergraduate chapter is as strong as it has been in a long time. The physical facility is second to
none on campus and a showcase for other colleges and universities. It is truly a wonderful time
to be a Phi Gam.
Many thanks to all the undergraduates and graduates who made this “historical weekend”
happen. We had fun doing it! Pergé!

TO ALL PHI GAMS:
Just a note to say thank you to all of you who were involved in making the
Reunion a tremendous success! Needless to say, everybody who attended had a
terrific time getting together. I was able to attend the Saturday events and just
wish I had come in earlier to make the Friday night activities.
Unfortunately, the ones from eastern North Carolina who had planned to attend
could not make the Friday night or Saturday events because of the damage and
hardships caused by Floyd. Also, and more importantly, we are all to be thankful
for the fact that many of us did not have any damage and should pray for those
who were less fortunate.
Although it has been years since I have attended a Pig Dinner, I would like to
challenge all of the Fijis who were at Epsilon between 1945 and 1955 to contact
five Brothers who were there in the late ’40s and early ’50s to come back to
Chapel Hill for the Pig Dinner next year! Everyone I have talked with since this
past weekend agree that it was a most enjoyable time to visit after the 40 or 45
years. Let us know when the date is for the Pig Dinner so we can get started with
the campaign for 2000.
Thanks again for an outstanding job getting us all together. Also, the House looks
great!
Take care,
Bill Hedrick ’51 (Ahh524@aol.com)

LARGE PLEDGE
CLASS MARKS
YEAR
By David Fleming ’00, Oliver
Wheeler ’01 and Chris Nuckols ’02
T
his fall marks the first semester in
three years when we had a house
to entice potential members to
the fraternity. Not surprisingly, we once
again had the largest pledge class among
the fraternities with whom we normally
socialize. As usual, eastern North
Carolina dominated the class; we also
attracted three out-of-state pledges and
one legacy. Towns represented by the
new pledge class include Farmville,
New Bern, Rocky Mount, Raleigh and
Smithfield. We were successful in
attracting one Texan, a “market” that we
hope will prove bountiful in the near
future.
All of the brothers are excited about
this year’s class, since it will mark the
first year that we were back in Vance
Hall. Screening the large numbers who
will be attracted to Vance Hall will be a
daunting but welcome task. Continuing
the rich tradition of the Epsilon chapter
will be the focus with each new class.
Rush will kick off this spring with
numerous events, as we look forward to
our Millennium class. It would be
helpful to receive the names and
addresses of potential rushees.
If you know of anyone whom you
would like us to contact, please forward
the names to either Lon Edward ’00 at
919-932-2621 or John Madison at 919832-8793.
The Epsilon Owl is published for the
members and friends of Epsilon
Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
Fraternity at the University of North
Carolina. Address changes, news
items, photos and contributions may
be sent in the enclosed envelope or
mailed to Phi Gamma Delta
Fraternity, Graduate Records
Office, P.O. Box 3367, Chapel
Hill, NC 27515-3367.
WORKING FOR THE BETTERMENT
OF VANCE HALL
By Lon Edwards ’00, Chapter President
G
reetings from the Phi Gam
house. We are pleased to report
that the first half of the 19992000 academic year has passed
smoothly, due to the efforts of the
graduate and undergraduate
brothers. Vance Hall reopened its
doors to the brotherhood in
August, allowing the Epsilon
chapter to once again be
united under one roof.
This event has
increased morale and
the sense of fellowship among the
undergraduates.
Vance Hall symbolizes the common
bond among past,
present and future
brothers of this
fraternity.
Epsilon chapter has
continued to thrive in the
areas of rush, philanthropy and
campus involvement this year. Our
three initiates from last spring and 15
this fall have brought our number up to
52 brothers. This is the first time in
many years that the Phi Gam house has
boasted a roster of over fifty brothers,
and we are confident that we will add to
this group of quality undergraduates
this spring.
This fall has also brought an
increase in our philanthropic ventures
and campus involvement. The
house continues with the
Adopt-A-Highway program and
has also joined a campus
movement to aid the flood
victims of Hurricane Floyd.
We were also active
with a charity
basketball tournament, an Adopt-aChild-for-Christmas
program, and the
Interfraternity
Council. Our chapter
received an award
from the university
recognizing our over-50percent participation rate
on campus during the
spring of 1999.
The reopening of Vance
Hall has thrust us into very exciting
times which we hope can be shared by
all. We will continue to work hard for
the betterment of the house. With the
support of the graduate and undergraduates alike, the Epsilon chapter will
continue to flourish.

remodeled house.
